A Message from District VP
Tim Hickman, CFE
Greetings from
Columbia!
I just recently
returned from the IAAM mid-winter board meetings in Dallas. It
was a great meeting. The senior leadership, staff and rest of
the board are all working very hard on your behalf. It was
also nice to see the World Headquarters. If you have not been
there and have the opportunity to do so, take it. Here are a
few updates from the meeting.
Dexter King has
just completed reorganizing the organizational structure and
offices. I believe his new approach will provide a much better
atmosphere and improve working relationships and productivity
in the office. Don Hancock has come back as Education
Director. This is a great (re) addition to the staff.
The lack of
tenants in the World Headquarters continues to be a drain on
cash. The board discussed several possibilities. Dexter and
Lionel will continue to pursue all options to alleviate this
drain.
After September
11, Lionel appointed a Safety and Security Task Force chaired
by Frank Poe. This task force brought together an
unprecedented group of professionals led by IAAM. In addition
to many of our members, there are representatives from all of
the major sports leagues, the NCAA, Clear Channel
Entertainment and others. IAAM has taken a leadership role in
creating this task force to help establish acceptable
guidelines and benchmarks in keeping public events safe and
secure.
The board approved
San Antonio as the site for the 2006 National Conference. We
also narrowed the choices for 2007 to Anaheim or Salt Lake
City.
If you have any
comments, questions or suggestions about IAAM please let me
know. I am here to represent the membership in District III
and need your input.
On a sad note, I
would like to express my sympathy to Dan Russell with the
recent passing of his wife Carolyn. Our thoughts and prayers
are with him and his family.
Don't forget the
District III Operations Seminar April 13-16 in Madison,
Wisconsin. Jim Hess and company are going to put on a great
program. This is an excellent opportunity for mid-level
managers and those newer to the business to get some great
information and network with their peers from around the
district. Look for the registration packets in early spring.
I hope to see
everyone in Baltimore April 26-29 for the Districts I, II &
III combined meeting. Domenick Sicilia and the local host
committee are putting together a great program with some great
educational sessions and plenty of social opportunities. The
conference hotel is the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel. You can
call 800-325-3537 or 410-962-8300 for reservations. The rate
is $178 single/double. There should be easy access through the
Baltimore Airport. Look for the registration packets in mid to
late February.
Please feel free
to call me at (573) 882-2056 or email me at
hickmantl@missouri.edu
if you have any questions or comments
Sincerely,
Tim Hickman

MIDWEST EXPRESS CENTER, U.S.
CELLULAR ARENA, MILWAUKEE
The curtain closed on November 1st on
the 92-year -long first act of the venerable Milwaukee Auditorium.
Intermission will last just over a year before the curtain rises
again for Act II, when the renovated, reconfigured venue begins a
new life as the "Milwaukee Theatre." The renovation project will
transform the venue's main performance space from a 6,120-seat, flat
floored arena to a flexible theater with a capacity from 2,500 to
4,400. The renovation will be funded through a $27.3 million,
30-year bond issue and $5 million in uncommitted funds from the
Midwest Express Center project.
On Jan. 26 & 27, the 7th Annual Great
Midwest Challenge brought 1,000 young gymnasts and their families
from all over the upper Midwest to Milwaukee for a premier
gymnastics meet - the only one in the nation to feature all three
disciplines of gymnastics together: Girls'/Women's Artistic, Boys'
Men's Gymnastics and Rhythmic Competition.
Feb. 2 & 3, Motorsports America 2002,
formerly the Wisconsin Motorsports Show, roars into the Midwest
Express Center with a huge array of custom and racing cars, bikes,
sleds, boats, accessories and information. It's Wisconsin's largest
pre-season event for motorsports fans, pros and amateurs of all
stripes - and a serious tradeshow where real racing business gets
done.
Other February events include the
Speed Stick National Arenacross Series, Feb. 8-10, the Midwest Biker
Motorcycle Swap Meet, Feb. 10, the Milwaukee Boat Show, Feb. 13-17,
Tripoli Shrine Circus, Feb. 21-24, and the Greater Milwaukee Auto
Show, Feb. 23-March 3. |
