We
are spending 20 percent of our cleaning budget to remove black marks
from forklifts in our exhibit halls.
How do you address this problem?

The key issue is to start with a “returned to clean” surface that can be
managed. From there you can take a few actions. Insist that all fork and
materials-related equipment be fitted with nonmarking tires. These are
expensive and typically do not wear as well as conventional tires, which
can cause maintenance cost overruns. Another option is to hold bond on
the promoter/hirer for the “return to cleanliness” of the floor post the
move out. In this manner you are making a logical recovery on the
expense. Or you can simply turn the problem into a facility income
stream. Insist that you charge a “post move out” cleaning/scrubbing fee
that is in addition to current charges.

I would recommend acquiring non-marking tires for the forklift( s).
There may be an issue with rental fork lifts; if so, there is a tire
booty that can be applied to forklift tires to minimize scuffing. This
issue can also apply to scissors lifts and knuckle booms. There may be a
solution in analyzing the current floor surface and utilizing a surface
that is more resistant to scuffing or that makes scuffs less noticeable.
