Intense times in our society call for intense education, which attendees of IAAM’s Academy for Venue Safety & Security received August 20-24 at the American Airlines Training Center near IAAM World Headquarters.

This year’s Academy offered both a Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum for students. At the end of the Academy, students participating in both years were given a comprehensive test and were recognized at a certificate ceremony.

AVSS offers the most meaningful, intensive training in security planning and life safety management for the public assembly venue industry. The Academy took attendees through an in-depth approach to many of the type of emergencies that have and will occur at public assembly facilities and also offered the most relevant and current safety and security training offered for individuals in venue management.

“The AVSS can best be described as helping individuals to prepare, prevent, respond and recover,” said Harold Hansen, CFE, AVSS coordinator. “The Academy succeeds in making sure people are fully versed in everything they need to do for the emergencies that are out there.”

Attendees also had an opportunity to complete the Vulnerability Identification Self-Assessment Tool (ViSAT), if they had not already done so. “This year was a very strong AVSS and we’re excited about some ideas we already have in mind and will be sharing soon for next year’s Academy,” Hansen said.
