What facilities have you worked in?
San Diego Convention Center, Colorado Convention Center, Buell
Theatre, Currigan Exhibition Hall, Red Rocks, Denver Coliseum, Warner
Brothers Studios, NBC, Denver Auditorium Theatre, San Francisco Opera House.
I think the total number comes up to some 47 facilities.
What is your favorite food or restaurant?
There is a small hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, two
blocks off Grant Avenue, that caters to locals. There’s no name on the front
of the establishment. You just walk in and eat what’s there.
What book are you currently reading (or what is
your favorite book)?
Shelby Foote’s History of the Civil War. History of the U.S. Navy in World
War II. All of John le Carré. The Book of Mormon.
What CD or cassette is in your car right now?
Johnny Cash.
What is the weirdest event you ever had in a
facility you've worked in? Strangest merchandise? Strangest anything?
Circuses are always fun. Have you ever paged a drape at the elephant
entrance to the show floor? And in spite of the trainer’s urging, one of
those big beasts stops dead in his tracks to investigate you? And the prayer
on your lips is, “Please Lord, let this magnificent creature be friendly,
but not too friendly!”
What is a motto, inspiration or quote you try to
live by?
Two of them, actually, that are tied together. As a dedicated Harley rider,
“It’s not the destination, but the journey.” And from my father, “Son, if
all you’re looking for is perfection, you’re going to flat out miss the
great mortal adventure of progress.”
Why did you choose to pursue the CFE?
This deserves a treatise, but there’s no room for that here, so: the
pursuit itself; the self-satisfaction; the refreshment; the prodding from
Dexter; the help from Dan; the caring from the IAAM staff; the distinct
pleasure of the CFE orals; and the company of the best of the best. Finally,
because my beloved and eternal companion — who 42 years ago agreed to marry
me — believes that I can leap tall buildings at a single bound. I know I
cannot. But because she believes, I must try.
What has been a benefit or is a benefit of
having a CFE?
In some measure, it’s a mark of determination. In any job or task in
which we’re engaged, we do finally work for ourselves. So the question is
always, what am I worth? To know that my value to my peers is enough for me
to wear the CFE is simply marvelous. It is one of IAAM’s most cherished
accomplishments. It’s a recognition that the privilege I have had to work
and labor in so many areas of this industry, in so many roles, has so well
added to my total life experience. Whenever I look at that little CFE token,
I must pause to also remember all of the circumstances, people and issues
that aided and abetted my own personal and professional development.
Would you recommend attaining CFE to other
international colleagues? Why?
Unequivocally, yes — to all of our international colleagues. The CFE
is a tie, a bond, a system of nomenclature, a recognition of standard and a
recognition of expectation. It is more important that we know what we know,
rather than I know what I know. We all have much to learn from our
international colleagues. This is a total, allencompassing industry.
What couldn't you live without?
My beloved companion and chocolate covered cherries — in that order.
What's your most prized possession?
Wow. Two levels to this question. On the higher level, the love of my
beloved companion and the life-long friendships that have come from working
in the theatre, film, concert, sports, entertainment and convention
industries. On the mean level, the beast with the 113 cubic-inch engine,
ported heads, 251 cam, Vance and Hine headers, S&S ovals, and six-speed
tranny — upon which my beloved companion and I go touring.
What's your favorite place on earth?
The mountains of Colorado.
What's your most favorite moment in sports
history?
The Ice Bowl; the Green Bay Packers third consecutive NFL championship; any
game in which the Green Bay Packers are playing. The Packers do not lose,
but they do sometimes run out of time.
What's the one thing most people would be
surprised to learn about you?
It is my great blessing to be privileged to teach Gospel Doctrine to an
adult Sunday School class.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Nothing to add, but only to multiply. I think it is all of the varied and
sundry (and most interesting) backgrounds and experiences that the members
of IAAM bring to this industry that multiply the IAAM experience. Not the
war stories, but the backgrounds and experiences that have shaped the
persons and professions of all of us in IAAM.
Engagement in the IAAM work is the best measure of exposure to all of those
backgrounds and experiences. In the IAAM work are the multiple opportunities
in which IAAM members may find their own shaping of person and profession.
Jump in. You will not drown. There are too many others in support of the
IAAM work in which you will engage to help you.
