What
Have We Done for You Lately?
A recap of the many programs funded by the IAAM Foundation
Whenever I have the opportunity to talk to my
industry colleagues about the IAAM Foundation it never ceases to amaze me that
there are still so many of you out there who aren’t familiar with the
extraordinary work funded by your IAAM Foundation.
You’re certainly familiar with the programs, to name just a few: Public Assembly
Facility Management School at Oglebay was launched over 20 years ago with IAAM
Foundation funds, and has grown into a selfsustaining school, thanks to
continued IAAM Foundation support. More than 250 of our colleagues have
participated in the Senior Executive Symposium at Cornell University, made
possible in part by the IAAM Foundation. The IAAM Foundation funded the first
Academy for Venue Safety and Security in 2004, and this continues to be an
essential annual educational experience.
Popular and valuable educational videos, like Service Excellence: Patrons with
Disabilities; Safety Awareness at Public Assembly Facilities; and Customer
Service Begins with Me: Superior Guest Relations at Public Assembly Facilities —
and the first-ever college level textbook on public assembly facility management
—all have been made possible by generous grants from your IAAM Foundation.
The United States Department of Homeland Security was so impressed with the
quality of work funded by the IAAM Foundation, and the depth and breadth of
knowledge of IAAM volunteers, that in 2005 it awarded the Foundation a
multipleyear grant for the largest program in our history. Grant products
include the Vulnerability Identification Self-Assessment Tool (ViSAT), which
allows security managers to identify vulnerabilities and assess the overall
security of their public assembly facility. We rely on IAAM’s Life Safety
Council to lead this important work.
Since 1983 your Foundation has awarded $2.6 million in programming and grants.
Through the Foundation’s investments we have advanced tremendously as an
industry through high quality and relevant educational opportunities. Following
are the grant awards for the 2007-2008 year:
• Body of Knowledge: Completely new and revised college textbook
• Life Safety Council: Seed funding for a new life safety magazine
• Professional Development: For special projects and programs
• Partners in Education: Ongoing support for PAFMS and PAFMS-GI at Oglebay, and
Senior Executive Symposium at Cornell University, and Diversity Education
• IAAM Europe: Translation and curriculum development
• Student scholarships for University Venue Management Conference
We look forward to seeing the results of the new grants, and we know there’s so
much more to do.
I’m very pleased to announce that we’ve made significant progress, and I want to
say thank you to those of you who stepped up and contributed to the 2006-07
Annual Giving Campaign. As of press time, I’m pleased to announce that we’re
just shy of 20% member participation, as compared to 14% at the same time last
year. Member generosity continues to inspire others: Giving in 2006-2007 totals
$67,762 so far, which is an amazing increase of 28% over last year!
Remember that IAAM is on a fiscal year beginning April 1, so if you’re in doubt
as to whether your gift is current, drop me an e-mail at
mswann@cobbgalleria.com and I’ll
check into it for you.
And now for the fun part. As we look ahead to the 82nd Annual IAAM Conference &
Trade Show in Salt Lake City, we ask that you mark your calendars for 6 a.m.,
July 20, 2007, for the 18th Annual Foundation Friday, taking place at Wasatch
State Park Golf Course in Utah’s picturesque Heber Valley! Voted one of the
“Best Places to Play” by Golf Digest, the spectacular Wasatch Mountain State
Park offers a 36-hole facility. This is a very important fundraiser for the
Foundation. For registration and sponsorship details, contact tournament
co-chair Christopher Lamberth, ASC, AIA, at

or Robert Rayborn, AIA, at rrayborn@tcco.com.
Chairing this year’s Silent Auction is Jane Kleinberger with the help of her
able committee, Kim Bedier, Donna Dowless, Heather Morris, Ike Richman, John
Siehl, CFE, and Beth Wade. You can help make it the best Silent Auction ever by
donating art, jewelry, airline tickets, hotel gift certificates and sports
memorabilia. To donate items, contact Jane Kleinberger at
jkleinberger@paciolan.com or
Stephanie Barreras at IAAM World Headquarters, (972) 538-1024, or
